How Pakistan forces stormed hijacked train, rescued passengers in Balochistan

On March 11, 2025, Pakistan was gripped by a terrifying crisis while separatist militants hijacked the Jaffar Express, a passenger train from Quetta to Peshawar, in the Bolan district of Balochistan province. The hijackers were identified to be members of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), Both Pakistan and the United States have designated this separatist militant group to be a terrorist group. The hijackers staged a well-coordinated attack that resulted in a standoff with Pakistani security forces.

The Hijacking Incident

The crisis started when militants remotely exploded bombs on the railroad tracks, making the Jaffar Express suddenly stop in a tunnel in the desolate and hilly landscape of the Bolan district. The attackers then fired on the train, killing the driver and panicking the about 450 passengers aboard. The BLA took responsibility for the attack, saying they had more than 400 hostages, including security officials, and were calling for the liberation of Baloch activists and political prisoners.

Demands and Threats

The BLA threatened to kill 5 captives every hour if their demands were not met, and they gave them a 48-hour deadline. The stakes were heightened, and a full-scale rescue effort was started by Pakistani officials.

Pakistan’s Response: Planning and Execution

The Pakistani military and security forces moved swiftly, deploying ground and air forces to the location. It turned out of the train was in a tunnel made the rescue attempt more challenging and the rough, rocky terrain. However, the insurgents were attacked in concert by the security forces.

The Rescue Operation

The operation went on for many grueling hours. Security forces fought intense gunfights with the militants, who were reportedly equipped with suicide vests and automatic guns. The firefight left 33 militants and four paramilitary men dead. Sadly, 21 passengers perished in the ordeal. Nonetheless, the swift and effective intervention of the security forces resulted in the successful evacuation of the surviving hostages.

Casualties and Consequences

21 passengers were killed in total, and a number of others were injured. The dead and the wounded were rushed to hospitals in the location for identification and treatment. The Pakistani government strongly condemned the attack to be an act of terrorism and reaffirmed that efforts to combat militancy in the place would be sought after.

Background: Balochistan’s Insurgency

Balochistan, the largest but least populated province of Pakistan, has been a hotbed of separatist rebellions for decades. The Baloch minority have long complained of discrimination and exploitation by the federal government &, consequently, of demands for more autonomy or outright independence. The BLA, one of the leading separatist movements, has had a hand in many attacks against security forces and infrastructure projects, including those relating to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Large-scale infrastructure projects are at risk due to regional instability, which in turn affects regional security dynamics, especially when it comes to neighboring countries like Afghanistan and Iran.

Government’s Stance and Future Measures

After the rescue operation, Pakistani officials reaffirmed their efforts at countering terrorism and providing safety to people. The government highlighted intelligence gathering & communication with people to avoid repeating such incidents in the future. It was in turn suggested that the root socio-economic grievances of the Baloch should be addressed in order to curb the attraction of separatist movements.
